Does Barfi! Best language Film
Anurag Basu’s film starring Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D’Cruz may have many good things going for it, but can all that override the fact that it’s a clever mishmash of ideas from several Indian and international flicks? So does it deserve to be sent to the Academy Awards?
The box office collections of Barfi! are soaring high – when we last checked the trade reports the film had made Rs 100 crores worldwide – with every passing day and night, and the Ranbir Kapoor-Priyanka Chopra-Ileana D’Cruz starrer has been selected to represent India as the official entry to the Academy Awards 2013. But there’s a spiky spoke in the wheel of happiness for the creators of the Charlie Chaplin-esque film.
Everyone who’s well versed with cinema beyond Bollywood has been questioning the originality of Anurag Basu’s sweet and simple tale of a deaf and mute lad. There is endless evidence (written and visual) to prove that Basu’s Barfi! in name of great cinema is a clear and clever case of a cut-copy-paste job. Even BollywoodLife’s Cineswami gave us a long list of films (Indian and international) that have obviously inspired the filmmaker.
And all this makes us wonder if the current rage in cine town is worthy of the shine and glory it is being honoured with. While there’s no harm in Basu seeking inspiration from his favourite films and filmmakers, we expected that he would do a better job than directly lifting scenes and situations from those classics. Does a so-called ‘inspirational’ Murphy-Barfi! deserve to be chosen to be sent to the Oscars? Will it bring us fame or more shame – you decide!
