Billy Scott Dies; R&B Singer Was 70

Was 70A spokesman from the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame confirmed that Scott died from pancreatic and liver cancer Saturday at his home in Charlotte, N.C.Billy Scott was born Peter Pendleton in Huntington, W. Va.

After he was discharged from the Army in 1964, he changed his name and with his wife, Barbara, in 1966 began recording as The Prophets.

The group’s first gold record was achieved in 1968 with “I Got the Fever.” Other hits included “California” and “Seaside Love” as the Georgia Prophets.

The group recorded a number of hits in the 1970s in the beach music genre, a regional variant of R&B, and achieved significant success.

He will be greatly missed by fans of the genre.
